Here you may apply for the Royal Historical Society’s Martin Lynn Scholarship.
The Royal Historical Society runs an active annual programme of research funding for historians at all career stages. The Martin Lynn Scholarship offers an award of £1,500 to support the research of a postgraduate researcher in African history.
The deadline for applications is Friday 4 September 2026.
Before beginning your application, please ensure that you meet all eligibility criteria. In particular:
- Applicants must be current members of the Royal Historical Society, with their subscription fully paid at the time of application.
- Applicants must be postgraduate research students in African history.
- The proposed project must be clearly and predominantly historical in orientation, with a defined chronological remit.
- Applications for research taking place within four weeks of the deadline, or for research already undertaken, are not eligible.
- Applicants previously awarded the Martin Lynn Scholarship are not eligible to reapply.
You will be asked to confirm and demonstrate your eligibility during the submission process.
As the Society seeks to use its limited funds to make the greatest possible impact within the historical community, consideration may be given to financial need and access to other sources of funding. Access to alternative funding will not invalidate your application; however, applicants are encouraged to provide sufficient information to enable the panel to assess the importance of this award to the progression of their research.
An academic reference is required in support of this application. Referees must submit their statement through this portal. Applications will only be considered complete once the reference has been received.
Further information about research support funding from the Royal Historical Society can be found on the RHS website.
