Description

Here you may apply for the Royal Historical Society's David Berry Fellowship.

The Royal Historical Society runs an active annual programme of research grants for historians at all career stages.

These awards include the  David Berry Fellowship which offers up to £2,500 to cover the costs of research, into an aspect of the history of Scotland and / or the history of the Scottish people within the United Kingdom or worldwide, within 12 months of 1 March 2024.

Applications for this award are due by 1 March 2024.

Please note the criteria for eligibility for this award, including current active membership. You will be asked to demonstrate your eligibility during the submission of your application.

The Royal Historical Society seeks to use its limited funds to make the greatest impact upon the historian community, by prioritising awards to those with greatest need. In making your application, you are encouraged to ensure you provide sufficient detail to enable those in the awarding panel to ascertain why access to these funds is necessary for you. We will ask for an honest assessment of alternative funds available to you, via your institution. We will also ask that your home department/institution supports your application. As this is a requirement for consideration of this award, you are advised to request support from your home department/institution well before the application deadline to allow your home department/institution time to complete the request. Access to alternative funds will not invalidate your submission, but will contribute towards the assessment of your application and may result in an award of a different value being made if successful.

You will be asked for a reference confirming the availability, or otherwise, of other sources of funding for this research.

Please also note that an academic reference in support of your application is a requirement for consideration of this award and can be requested directly from within this portal.
